Important Papers

a. Tagore Papers (1913-1941)
In this section you will find numerous original and unpublished letters of Rabindranath and Abanindranath Tagore to Mukul Dey. These illuminate certain interesting yet unknown facts behind Rabindranath Tagore's first ever exhibition in Paris in May, 1930.

Also available is the illustrated catalogue of Rabindranath Tagore's 1932 exhibition of Government Art School, Calcutta which Mukul Dey sponsored.

Tagore apart, there are letters, original photographs and documents of Dey's contemporaries — E. B. Havell, Albert Einstein, Sven Hedin, Muirhead Bone, George Clausen, Henry Tonks, M. K. Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Francis Younghusband, W. W. Pearson, Thomas Sturge-Moore etc.

b. Japan Papers (1915 - 1918)
This section contains documents related to Japan, such as

  • Noted lexicographer and British-Indian spy Sarat Chandra Das' official address at Indo-Japanese Association, Tokyo (1915)
  • The entire text of Rabindranath Tagore's two important lectures in Japan (1916) - "India and Japan" and "The Message from India to Japan" (photocopied from Osaka Asahi Shimbun and Mairichi Shimbun, June 1916)
  • About 55 letters in original of Mukul Dey from Japan, 1916.
  • Photocopies of various "secret" and "very confidential" reports generated by the British Foreign Office, London; Foreign & Political Department and Directorate of Criminal Intelligence, New Delhi & Simla.

These reports throw light on Meiji/Taisho Imperial Japan and her policies of using Indian revolutionaries to cause political unrest in India, as recorded from the perspective of India's British rulers. These documents in facsimile were compiled from various files in the custody of National Archives, New Delhi, India.

Interestingly, these papers implicate Rabindranath Tagore's connection with various Japanese imperialists and "transpire" his connection to San Fransisco Conspiracy Case of 1917 as well.

c. Ajanta & Bagh (1918 - 1920)
Papers related to Mukul Dey's accounts of these two important Buddhist cave shrines in India, which contain some of the earliest evidences of the art of painting as it flourished on the Indian subcontinent.

d. Sigiriya & Sittanavasal (1946)
Documents and images related to Dey's journey to Sigiriya in Sri Lanka and Sittanavasal in Pudukottai, South India to study and copy the ancient fresco paintings.

e. Birbhum Terracotta Temples (1946-1952)
This section consists of about 1000 original and unpublished negatives and numerous photographs of Birbhum-Barddhaman group of temple clusters. Also present are the original typescript of Dey's field notes he kept while doing this major photo-documentation work
