Bolpur is the railhead closest to Santiniketan. Numerous trains run between Kolkata and Bolpur. Travel time is around 2 ½–3 hours. From Bolpur take a cycle rickshaw to Santiniketan, 2 km away.

By road, Santiniketan is around 180 km from Kolkata. Hire a taxi or catch the daily bus from Esplanade to Rampurhat which goes via Santiniketan.

The closest airport is Kolkata.

All visits to MDA are by prior appointment only.

Researchers can write to us for seeking an appointment either on email or regular mail addressing the application to, Mr. Satyasri Ukil, Managing Trustee, Mukul Dey Archives Trust, “Chitralekha”, Seba-Palli, P. O. Santiniketan, West Bengal, INDIA 731235.

The application must include:

  1. Researcher’s name
  2. A recent passport-size photograph
  3. Educational qualification
  4. Name of Institution
  5. Research proposal

Academic researchers must have their applications endorsed by their surpervisors and private researchers should have them endorsed by a person of known academic merit, preferably a person teaching in a university or equivalent body.

The researchers may apply by email. However, when they visit the archives, researchers are expected to submit a hard copy of their application including all the details mentioned above for our records.

Rules

No digital or any other cameras to be carried / allowed into MDA. No personal scanners will be allowed inside MDA as well.

On receiving a written request from the researcher, the MDA will provide low resolution watermarked digital images (72 dpi) of the documents requested, according to the fee schedule mentioned below. These reference images may be used in their thesis as is, with due acknowledgement to MDA.

For requests of all publication quality images, the specifications and fees are to be negotiated seperately.

All researchers are required to submit a copy of their completed work for our records. In case of academic researchers this would be their thesis / dissertation and for private researchers  a copy of their article / book after it is published. A MoU will be raised between MDA and the researcher to this effect.

Fee Schedule

MDA is a small and private archive and as such all access would constitute ‘Assisted Research’, for which the researchers need to pay an Assistance Fee.

Registration Fee: Valid for duration of 7 calendar days.

Indian Nationals: Rs. 5000/- (INR)
Foreign Nationals: $300 (USD)

Assistance Fee: Per day (8 hrs)

Indian Nationals: Rs. 1500/- (INR)
Foreign Nationals: $150 (USD)

All payments to be made payable to MUKUL DEY ARCHIVES TRUST account with State Bank of India, Santiniketan branch, West Bengal, India.

* Researchers must supply the cds to burn  images or must carry their own digital memory devices to take the images.
